Barbara McKinzie began her initial steps in business and finance while majoring in Business Administration at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. She then went on to receive her Masters in Business Administration and Human Resources from the prestigious Kellogg Graduate School at Northwestern University in 1997.
For over two decades Barbara progressed to senior management positions in Big 4 public accounting, Fortune 100 corporations and Government. In these roles, she led revenue growth in excess of 40% and managed successful IPOs that raised over $600 million. She was able to improve operating performance by transforming a 14 year deficit of $30 million into $65 million profit within two years and developed unique skills as a turnaround expert. For these accomplishments, among many others, Barbara is recognized as a driven and inspirational leader with outstanding team-building and management skills.
In 2006, Barbara became the twenty-seventh President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. During the four years Barbara served as President of AKA, she led a period of unprecedented growth in both membership numbers as well as the sorority’s endowment. Growing the endowment base from zero to $14 million, Barbara was able to reduce the organization’s annual expenses by $1 million. Within two years she reduced staff by 12 percent whilst still maintaining efficiency and productivity levels in addition to adopting and incorporating new technologies into their day-to-day functions. Barbara was also able to increase the sorority’s cash and investment assets by 40 percent, managing to grow the amount of individuals served by AKA’s global economic program from under two million to over 17 million during her tenure. She also increased global membership levels by 15 percent to a record number of 250,000 members.
Barbara has established herself as an expert in the finance, business management, consulting, and public speaking sectors. She has served as the keynote speaker at events in 17 countries and has received awards from a number of different organizations as well as an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Her honors also include numerous invitations to visit the White House and an appointment to the United States War College as a private citizen.
